European Standard EN 12875-1
EN 12875-1 specifies a reference test method for assessing the resistance of domestic articles made from ceramic, glass, glass ceramic, vitreous enamel, metal, and plastics under combined chemical, thermal, and mechanical stresses in dishwashers. The standard does not define the number of dishwashing cycles a product must withstand but provides a framework for testing durability.
Key Testing Parameters:
1. Chemical Resistance: Evaluates the impact of detergents and rinse agents on materials.
2. Thermal Stress: Assesses the effects of high-temperature cycles.
3. Mechanical Wear: Measures the impact of water jets and utensil movement.
4. Visual Inspection: Identifies changes in gloss, cloudiness, corrosion, and surface degradation.
Test Cycle:
a) Draining the dishwasher by pump.
b) Pre-washing the test specimens in the dishwasher by:
1. filling the dishwasher with water;
2. circulating the water for 5 min;
3. draining the dishwasher by pump.
c) Washing the test specimens in the dishwasher by:
1. filling the dishwasher with water and 24g cleaning agent per 6.0 litres of water;
2. heating to 60 C while circulating the water and cleaning agent for 20 min;
3. circulating the water and cleaning agent for a further 10 min without heating;
4. draining the dishwasher by pump.
d) Intermediate rinsing the test specimens in the dishwasher by:
1. filling the dishwasher with water;
2. circulating the water for 3 min;
3. draining the dishwasher by pump.
e) Final rinsing the test specimens in the dishwasher by:
1. filling the dishwasher with water;
2. heating to 65 C while circulating the water;
3. measuring when a temperature of between 40 C and 45 C has been reached, and adding between 2.5g and 3.0g of rinse agent per 6.0 litres of water.
4. measuring when a temperature of 65 C has been reached and draining the dishwasher by pump.
f) Drying the test specimens in the dishwasher by retaining them in the dishwasher for:
1. 10 min with the door closed;
2. 30 min with the door open.
Remark: Number of test cycles: At least 125 test cycles, and then multiples of 250 cycles.
